Funding paperwork kit
Asking a program to help pay for a GPS tracker means paperwork. These free templates make it easier: a quote for Ontario Autism Program funding, a Letter of Medical Necessity for a US doctor to sign, a letter for your child's therapist, and a one-page guide to Jordan's Principle. Print them, or fill them in on screen.

A GPS tracker may be eligible under some programs, but each program decides for itself. StepSafe is not part of any program named here and does not guarantee funding. This is not medical, tax or legal advice.
Ask the program before you buy, follow its own forms if it has them, and keep copies of everything you send.
How to use the kit
- Ask first. Call or email the program and ask what it needs from you.
- Get a letter. Ask your child’s doctor, BCBA, OT or SLP to fill in the letter that fits.
- Send the quote and the letter together, with any form the program gives you.
- Keep your records: the invoice, your proof of payment and the letter.
The templates
Ontario Autism Program: quote or invoice
An itemized quote or invoice for Lifetime Pro, our one-payment plan with no monthly fee, in Canadian dollars (CA$399, with no HST charged). It shows the seller, our address, the date, a quote or invoice number, the device and its lifetime service, the total, with space for your name, address and your child’s name. StepSafe is not registered for GST/HST yet, so the quote charges no tax.
Ontario’s expenses list for childhood budgets and interim one-time funding names GPS tracking devices under technology, one technology item every two years. Ontario asks families to keep invoices and proof of payment, such as a credit card, debit or PayPal statement, for 7 years. For core clinical services funding, technology needs a letter of recommendation from your child’s regulated professional, sent with the invoice. Read our Ontario Autism Program guide and the official Ontario expenses list. Questions about your funding go to AccessOAP at 1-833-425-2445.
Want it filled in with your name, a quote number or, after you order, your order number and payment? Email support@stepsafetech.com and we will send it back to you.
US families: Letter of Medical Necessity for HSA or FSA funds
A letter for your child’s doctor to complete and sign. It has spaces for the patient, the diagnosis (such as autism or dementia with a risk of wandering), why a GPS location device is needed to lower that risk, how long it is needed, and the doctor’s name, NPI, signature and date.
IRS Publication 502 describes medical care as costs for the diagnosis, cure, mitigation, treatment or prevention of disease. An item people normally buy for personal use counts only if it is used mainly to prevent or ease an illness or disability. The IRS does not ask for a letter, but many plans do. A GPS tracker may be eligible with your plan; check with your plan administrator before you buy and keep the letter with your receipt. Read IRS Publication 502 and IRS Publication 969 on HSAs and FSAs.
A letter from your child's BCBA, OT or SLP
For a behaviour analyst, occupational therapist or speech-language pathologist who knows your child. It covers their credential and licence number, how they know your child, the wandering they have seen, and their recommendation.
It includes every item Ontario lists for a core clinical services letter of recommendation, and it can serve as a letter of support for Jordan’s Principle or a letter for a US waiver or funder.
Jordan's Principle: a guide for First Nations families
Jordan’s Principle helps First Nations children get the products, services and supports they need, without gaps or delays. A parent, guardian or authorized representative can ask by calling the Jordan’s Principle Call Centre, open 24 hours a day, at 1-855-572-4453 (TTY 1-866-553-0554), or through a regional focal point.
Include the quote as your cost breakdown and a letter of support from someone who knows your child. Requests are reviewed case by case, and Indigenous Services Canada recommends waiting for a decision before you pay. For Inuit children, ask about the Inuit Child First Initiative. Details on the official Jordan’s Principle page.
What we make
StepSafe makes a clip-on cellular GPS tracker for children who wander. It ships in early 2027. Nothing on this page means any program will pay for it.
